UNSEEN PASSAGE – FACTUAL / DESCRIPTIVE / LITERARY

1. WHAT IS AN UNSEEN PASSAGE?

An Unseen Passage is a passage that students have not read or studied before the examination. Students have to read the given passage carefully, understand its meaning, and answer questions based on it.

An unseen passage mainly tests a student's ability to:

• Understand the main idea of the passage
• Find specific information
• Interpret ideas and statements
• Draw conclusions or inferences
• Understand vocabulary from context
• Answer accurately on the basis of the passage

Key Point:

Answers should be based mainly on the information given in the passage. Avoid adding unnecessary personal opinions or unrelated information.

2. TYPES OF UNSEEN PASSAGES

A. FACTUAL PASSAGE

A Factual Passage gives information based on facts, real situations, observations, or general knowledge.

Common topics may include:

• Social Issues
• Nature
• Lifestyle

Example:

Regular physical activity is important for maintaining good health. It strengthens the body, improves blood circulation, and helps reduce stress.

Question:

Mention two benefits of regular physical activity.

Answer:

In a factual passage, concentrate on:

B. DESCRIPTIVE PASSAGE

A Descriptive Passage describes a person, place, event, object, experience, or situation in detail.

Such passages may contain descriptions of:

• Appearance
• Surroundings
• Atmosphere
• Behaviour
• Feelings
• Experiences

Example:

The village looked beautiful in the early morning. Green fields stretched on both sides of the narrow road. Birds chirped in the trees while farmers walked towards their fields.

Question:

What made the village morning beautiful?

Answer:

The green fields, narrow road, chirping birds, and farmers going to their fields created a beautiful village morning.

Place → Person → Situation → Details → Mood/Feeling
