Human Reproduction – Notes
1. Male Reproductive System
- The male reproductive system consists of testes, epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, penis and accessory glands.
- Testes are the primary male reproductive organs.
- Testes are situated outside the abdominal cavity in the scrotum.
- Seminiferous tubules are associated with sperm formation.
- Spermatogonial cells participate in sperm formation.
- Sertoli cells provide nourishment and support to developing sperm cells.
- Leydig or interstitial cells are associated with secretion of male sex hormones.
- Seminal vesicles, prostate gland and Cowper's glands are accessory glands.
2. Spermatogenesis
Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of sperms.
Stages:
- Multiplication Phase: Spermatogonia multiply.
- Growth Phase: Spermatogonia grow and form primary spermatocytes.
- Maturation Phase: Primary spermatocytes undergo meiotic divisions.
Sequence:Spermatogonia → Primary Spermatocyte → Secondary Spermatocytes → Spermatids → Sperms
3. Structure of Sperm
A sperm consists of four major parts:
- Head: Contains the nucleus and acrosomal region.
- Neck: Connects the head with the middle piece.
- Middle Piece: Provides energy required for sperm movement.
- Tail: Helps in movement of sperm.
Sequence: Head → Neck → Middle Piece → Tail
4. Oogenesis
Oogenesis is the process of formation and development of the female gamete or ovum.
Stages:
- Multiplication Phase
- Growth Phase
- Maturation Phase
During maturation, the developing cells undergo maturation divisions leading to the formation of the female gamete.
5. Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system consists mainly of:
- Ovaries
- Fallopian tubes/Oviducts
- Uterus
- Cervix
- Vagina
- External reproductive structures
Ovary: Primary female reproductive organ associated with formation of female gametes.
Fallopian Tube: Connects the ovarian region towards the uterus.
Uterus: Site associated with development of the embryo after implantation.
Cervix: Lower portion of the uterus.
Vagina: Forms a part of the female reproductive tract.
6. Embryonic Development
After fertilisation, the zygote undergoes a series of developmental changes.
Sequence:Zygote → Cleavage → Blastomeres → Morula → Blastula → Gastrula
- Cleavage: Repeated divisions of the zygote.
- Blastomeres: Cells produced during cleavage.
- Morula: Multicellular stage…
